Having spent the last few months blogging about Asia, my first food blog should probably centre around some sort of Asian cuisine. However, Mexican food is my all time favourite, and La Fiesta in Ho Chi Minh City may just well serve the best Tex-Mex I’ve ever tasted. It was so good that it inspired me to start a food section of my blog – I couldn’t possibly do this place justice in just a few alluding sentences on one of my travel posts!
Located on a quiet street in the middle of Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1, this place is really central and just a short walk away from the city’s backpacker’s area. It’s not the most obvious place to find, so it’s best off putting the address in Google Maps – we only came across it after extensive Googling to find the best Mexican in Saigon to feed our hangovers. The restaurant itself is really homely and cosy, with only about 8-10 tables in, so you may have to wait for a table in the evening. Trust me, it’s worth it!
The first thing we noted about this place was that the menu is amazing. It’s absolutely massive with every variation of burrito, taco, enchilada and nacho that my rumbling belly could have dreamed of. They also do a bargain lunchtime deal where you can get tacos, salad, rice, refried beans AND a chocolate brownie for 150,000 Dong (about £5)!!
After much consideration I finally ordered the baked potato and chorizo tacos, whilst my boyfriend went for the fully loaded baked potato burrito. Notice a recurring theme here? Our hangovers were yearning for some carb on carb action, and whoever’s idea it was to put baked potato inside of tacos/burritos is a genius IMHO. My soft tacos were filled with chorizo, chunks of baked potato, onion, coleslaw, feta cheese and coriander – pretty much all of my favourite things in one. The portion sizes here are ginormous too, which is the easiest way to my heart. I got three good sized tacos which were served with a helping of rice and black refried beans which were an absolute show-stealer.
Jordan was brought out not one, but two huge burritos. For normal people this could have been a meal for two but this place really just got us and what our appetites are about. His had in baked potato chunks too with chili con carne, cheese and bacon. I obviously tasted this too (for research purposes) and it was up there with the best burritos I’ve ever had. We only ordered a main course each but there was SO MUCH food between us (you also get homemade tortilla chips and salsa on the house) I swear we almost burst. I was so full I thought I might be sick but I couldn’t bring myself to stop eating until it was all gone – my checklist for a successful meal!
If you love Mexican food, have a bottomless stomach and ever find yourself in Ho Chi Minh then you have to try this place.
Find it at: 33 Dang Thi Nhu Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
